How to Prevent Car Theft
There is an estimated 1 million vehicles stolen in the United States almost every year. Auto theft is a consistent issue faced in our society and there are many problems that come as a result, namely and increase in insurance rates. The probability of having your automobile or its contents stolen is probably higher than you think. Thankfully, there are some things that can be done to lower the chance of having your vehicle stolen.
First and foremost, the best prevention would be to buy a pink or other brightly colored car. Statistics show that colors that stand out are stolen less than more subtle colors. For many people this is not an option because they prefer other colors.
A more realistic approach involves not leaving your automobile unattended with the keys in the ignition. There is a substantial amount of people in colder climates that warm up their cars in the winter and leave the keys in the ignition. This also occurs when people are simply impatient by doing things such as leaving their vehicle outside a store while they run in quickly.
Another thing to remember is to always lock your automobile and shut the windows. Some thieves are skilled enough to start the engine without keys and closing window discourages criminals from auto theft.
A person can also discourage thieves from stealing the contents of their car, but ensuring that valuables are out of sight. Lock all expensive items if possible in the trunk or place them under seats if it is a must. It is never smart to leave cash, cards, or other important items in plain sight to tempt people to break into your car.
There are also anti theft devices available that make it almost impossible to steal your automobile. One such item is a steering wheel lock that prevents the steering wheel from being turned. Many auto insurance providers offer discounts for these devices as well.
Those are the more important things to remember, but there are a few other things that can be done as well. Try to park in areas that are well lighted and with many people. Park your car in your garage whenever possible and ensure it is locked. Also consider a vehicle locating system that uses GPS to track your car’s location.
While not all of these methods will save you money directly on your auto insurance premium, they can reduce the likelihood of having your automobile stolen. This in turn will prevent any increases in your rates that could result if your vehicle was ever in fact stolen.
